Identification
Pavement ants and carpenter ants look similar to most people and need genuinely different work. We confirm which one you have first, because treating a carpenter ant problem as a pavement ant problem is the usual reason a previous attempt failed.

Ants tell you where they live if you watch them long enough. We follow the trail from where you see them back to the nest — under a slab, behind a soffit, inside a damp window header — rather than guessing at the likely spot.

Ant Treatment — straight answers
How do I tell carpenter ants from ordinary ants?
Carpenter ants are noticeably larger, usually black or black and reddish, and they leave coarse shavings rather than soil — small piles of what looks like sawdust mixed with insect parts. The strongest clue is timing: pavement ants are a summer problem, so large ants walking across a kitchen floor in February almost always means a nest inside the heated part of the building.
Do carpenter ants damage a house the way termites do?
They damage it differently. They do not eat the wood — they hollow out galleries in it to nest, and they choose wood that is already damp or partly rotted. Finding them indoors usually points to a moisture problem worth tracking down: a leaking window header, a poorly flashed deck ledger, or a roof leak above a soffit.
Should I spray the trail before you arrive?
Please do not, if you can avoid it. A live trail is the fastest route we have to the nest, and a repellent spray scatters the ants and sends the colony looking for a second way in. Wiping the counter for hygiene is fine — it is the insecticide we would rather you held off on.
Will they be back next summer?
Pavement ants live in the soil around Calgary properties in large numbers, so the goal is keeping them out of the building rather than clearing them off the block. A treated perimeter, sealed entry points and a look at the moisture sources is what holds. Carpenter ants are different — once the nest is dealt with and the damp wood is fixed, they do not simply re-establish.
