Squirrel Control
Squirrels get in high — a soffit corner, a roof or gable vent, the gap where a roofline meets a wall — and once they are in an attic they chew. Wiring, ducting, vapour barrier and insulation are all fair game, which makes this a damage problem rather than just a noise problem. Removal and proofing are one job; doing either on its own reliably gets you a repeat.

Roofline inspection
We trace the access rather than guessing at it. There is usually one working entry and several test spots nearby, and finding all of them is the difference between a fix and a squirrel simply moving over a metre. We check the attic at the same time for the nest, the damage and any young.

Humane removal
One-way exclusion at the active entry, or hands-on removal where the situation calls for it, handled humanely and within Alberta’s wildlife regulations. Timing is planned around litters — closing an entry with young inside is the mistake that turns this into a dead-animal call.

Proofing the roofline
Heavy-gauge mesh over vents, soffit and fascia gaps closed, and chewed timber capped in metal so the same corner is not simply reopened. We also flag the branches, downpipes and structures that give squirrels their route onto the roof.

Common questions
Squirrel Control — straight answers
Is a squirrel in the attic really a problem, or just noisy?
The noise is the least of it. Squirrels gnaw constantly, and attic wiring, low-voltage cable and flexible ducting are all within reach. Add compacted and soiled insulation over a nesting season and you have a repair bill that is considerably larger than the removal.
It seems to have left on its own. Do I still need to do anything?
Yes — close the hole. Squirrels return to a den site they know, and an open roofline entry does not stay unoccupied for long; birds, wasps and mice will all take an opening that is already made. Proofing is the part that has lasting value.
Can this be done without harming the animal?
That is the normal approach. One-way exclusion lets the squirrel leave under its own steam and stops it getting back in, and it is handled humanely and within Alberta’s wildlife regulations. The main constraint is timing: squirrels here have young in the spring and again later in the season, and we check before anything is closed.
Does it matter whether they are red squirrels or grey?
It affects the proofing. Calgary has both, and the smaller red squirrels can use an opening a grey squirrel could not, so the gaps that need closing on a given roofline are not always the ones you would expect. Identification during the inspection is what sets the mesh and the scope of the sealing.
