Bird Spiking Installation
Spikes are a landing deterrent, not a barrier. On a narrow ledge, a sign top, an exposed beam or a parapet coping they work well and stay invisible from the ground — but they are the wrong tool for a recessed balcony or an open roof void, and we will tell you when that is what you actually have. Fitting spikes where netting is needed is the most common bird-proofing mistake we get called out to correct.

Survey and honest suitability call
We look at the surface width, the pressure and what the birds are doing there. Spikes suit narrow landing surfaces under light to moderate pressure; a wide ledge, a recess or a nesting site needs netting instead, and we would rather say so at the survey than sell you a system that fails.

Specification
Stainless spike systems are chosen for the surface width — a single row does nothing on a coping wide enough to land beside it. We select the row count and the base type to suit the ledge, the substrate and whether the surface needs to stay drainable.

Surface preparation and cleaning
Existing droppings and nest debris are cleared and the surface is cleaned before anything is fixed, because adhesive set onto soiled masonry does not hold. On heavily fouled ledges this is done as a proper clean-down, not a wipe.

Installation and finish
Bases are mechanically fixed or adhesive-set to suit the substrate, set continuously so there are no gaps to land in, and finished around corners, fixings and returns. Installed to last — and we stand behind the work.

Common questions
Bird Spiking Installation — straight answers
Are spikes cruel? Do they injure the birds?
No. Spikes are blunt-tipped and work by removing the landing surface, not by injuring anything — a bird approaches, finds nowhere to set down, and goes elsewhere. They are a physical deterrent in the same way netting is, and no chemicals or shock devices are involved.
Birds are nesting behind the spikes we already have. Why?
Almost always because the ledge is wider than the spike system covers, or because debris built up between the rows and gave them a base to nest on. Spikes only work when they cover the full landing width and stay clear. Where the ledge is genuinely too deep, the honest answer is netting rather than adding another row.
When do you recommend netting instead?
When the birds have volume to work with — a recessed balcony, a courtyard, a canopy underside, an open roof plant area, or any place they are nesting rather than just perching. Spikes stop landing on a line; netting closes a space. Choosing between them is the whole point of the survey.
Will spikes damage our building or void a roof warranty?
Fixing method is chosen for the substrate, and on membrane roofs and sensitive finishes we use adhesive-set bases rather than drilling. Tell us at the survey if there is a roof warranty or heritage restriction in play and we will specify around it. We are fully insured and WCB covered, and our technicians are fall-protection and ladder-safety certified for the work at height.
