Woodpecker Control
Woodpecker damage is seasonal and specific: drumming on siding at first light in spring, and holes drilled through cedar, stucco or fascia. It is territorial behaviour and a search for cavities and insects, not random destruction. Woodpeckers are federally protected, so lethal control is not on the table — the work is deterrence, repair and exclusion, done in the right order.

How we handle it
- 01
Assessment
We work out what the bird is doing, because the three behaviours need different answers. Drumming on a resonant surface is territorial noise, shallow rows usually mean it is finding insects in the cladding, and a deep cavity means it is trying to nest — and an insect problem in the wall is worth knowing about on its own.
- 02
Deterrence
Visual and physical deterrents are placed on the affected elevation, and we are straight with you about them: they need to go up early in the season, they need to be positioned where the bird is actually working, and they perform better as part of a plan than on their own.
- 03
Repair and exclusion
Existing holes are closed and the surface protected, because open damage invites both the same bird back and water into the wall. On persistent sites we net or screen the affected face so there is nothing to drill, which is the only approach that reliably ends it.
- 04
Follow-up through the season
Spring territorial behaviour runs for a matter of weeks and a determined bird will test what you put up. We check the site while the pressure is on and adjust rather than fitting deterrents and walking away.

Where we work
Woodpecker Control across Calgary
Woodpecker calls in Calgary cluster on homes with cedar and stucco cladding backing onto green space, river corridors and mature tree cover, and they arrive in a short window each spring. We handle deterrence, repair and exclusion for homeowners, acreages and property managers across the city and out to Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, Okotoks and Strathmore, where houses backing onto trees see the same pattern year after year.

Common questions
Woodpecker Control — straight answers
Can you not just remove the bird?
No. Woodpeckers are federally protected, and lethal control is not something we offer or would recommend. Everything we do is deterrence, exclusion and repair — and in practice that works better anyway, because removing one bird from good habitat simply opens the spot for the next.
Why is it drumming on my metal chimney cap and gutter?
Because it is loud. Spring drumming is a territorial signal, and the bird is looking for the most resonant surface it can find, not for food or a nest site. That is the version most likely to respond to deterrents, since the bird is after the sound rather than anything inside the wall.
Does damage mean I have insects in my siding?
Sometimes. Rows of shallow probing holes often mean the bird is finding larvae or beetles in the cladding, which is worth inspecting for on its own. Deep single cavities are usually nesting attempts, and drumming on hard, resonant surfaces is neither — it is noise.
Will the deterrents ruin the look of the house?
Most of what we use goes on for the weeks that matter and comes off afterwards. Where a house gets hit every spring on the same elevation, a permanent screening or netting solution on that face is usually less noticeable in the long run than repeated stucco patches — and we will show you what it looks like before we install it.
