Neither is solved by hanging a trap and waiting — in both cases the fix is finding the material they are breeding in, removing it, and then treating the space it was sitting in.

Identification
Pantry moths and clothes moths send us to opposite ends of the house. We confirm which you have from the insect and the damage, because a kitchen treatment does nothing for a wardrobe problem and a closet treatment does nothing for an infested bag of flour.

Source removal
For pantry moths that means going through every dried good in the cupboard, not only the open ones — larvae chew into sealed packaging, and birdseed and pet food are the two sources people never check. For clothes moths it means stored wool, rugs under furniture, felt pads, and anything natural-fibre that has sat undisturbed.

Treatment of the space
Once the source is out, licensed application goes into the cracks, shelf edges, cupboard and closet perimeters and carpet edges where the larvae and pupae sit. Applied before the source is removed it is wasted work, which is why we do it in this order. Pheromone monitors go in to track what is left.

Common questions
Moth Control — straight answers
Do the pheromone traps from the shop fix it?
They are a monitoring tool, not a cure. They catch adult males and tell you whether the problem is still active, which is genuinely useful — but they do nothing about the larvae in the packet at the back of the cupboard, and a trap that keeps filling is telling you the source has not been found. We use them alongside treatment for exactly that reason.
Do I have to throw out everything in the pantry?
No, but you do have to look at everything in it. Anything showing webbing, clumping or larvae goes; anything in genuinely airtight glass or hard plastic is almost always fine. The frustrating part is that unopened paper and cardboard packaging is not protection, so the bag of flour you assumed was safe is worth opening and checking.
Where did they come from in the first place?
Pantry moths are nearly always carried in with dried goods — flour, grains, nuts, dried fruit, pet food, birdseed — and they were often already in the packet when it came home from the shop. Clothes moths usually arrive on second-hand clothing, rugs or furniture. In neither case does it say anything about how clean the house is.
Do cedar blocks and lavender keep clothes moths away?
Not reliably. They may deter adults to some degree in a sealed space, but they do not kill larvae that are already feeding, and by the time you notice damage the larvae are what matter. Cleaning garments before storage and sealing them properly does far more, because moths go for fibres carrying sweat, skin and food residue.
