Rodent Exclusion
Exclusion is the carpentry half of rodent work: finding the gaps a mouse can actually use and closing them with materials it cannot chew through. Baiting and trapping deal with the animals already inside — exclusion is what stops the next ones taking the same route. It is the step most attempts skip, and it is why a problem sorted out in October is back in November.

Entry-point survey
We work the exterior from the grade line to the roof and then the interior — mechanical room, under sinks, cold room, attic hatch, garage threshold — and list every opening that is genuinely usable. The list is specific, because “seal the house up” is not an instruction anyone can act on.

Sealing and screening
Openings are backed with steel mesh or hardware cloth and finished with the right sealant or mortar for the surface. The material has to resist gnawing rather than just look closed — this is the difference between exclusion and filler.

Doors, vents and rooflines
Door sweeps, garage thresholds and worn weatherstripping get replaced; dryer, bathroom, attic and soffit vents get proper screening or covers. Vents still have to vent, so the work is done to keep airflow while closing the opening to rodents.

Verification and handover
We walk the finished work with you and hand over the list of what was sealed, plus anything that belongs to another trade — a failed roof edge, a foundation crack, a soffit that needs rebuilding. You should know what was closed and what is still open.

Common questions
Rodent Exclusion — straight answers
Can I not just use expanding foam or steel wool?
Foam on its own gets chewed straight through — it seals air, not rodents. Loose steel wool rusts, compacts and gets pulled out of a hole within a season. The method that lasts is a metal backing sized to the opening, mechanically held, then sealed. Foam and sealant are finishing materials, not the barrier.
How small a gap actually matters?
A house mouse needs roughly the width of a pencil. If you can push a pencil into a gap, treat it as an entry point. Rats need more, but not much more, and both will work at a smaller opening to make it bigger — which is why a hole that looks harmless in August is a problem by October.
Do you do the repairs, or just tell me what needs fixing?
We do the sealing, screening and door and vent work ourselves. Where the real fix is structural — roofing, siding, foundation, a rebuilt soffit — we say so plainly and tell you what to ask that trade for, rather than covering it with something that will not hold.
Will exclusion on its own get rid of the mice already inside?
No, and the order matters. Sealing a building that still has an active population inside leaves the rodents in there with you, and can leave one dead in a wall cavity. Exclusion is normally paired with treatment or trapping, with the sealing done at the right point in that sequence.
