Identification
Carpet beetle damage and clothes moth damage get confused constantly, and they send you looking in different places. Carpet beetles graze irregular thinning patches and leave shed larval skins behind; moths leave silk. We confirm which one you are dealing with before we start pulling rooms apart.

Source location
The larvae need somewhere undisturbed with something keratin-based to eat. We check closet floors, under beds and heavy furniture, carpet edges and underlay, floor vents and duct lint, stored wool and felt, taxidermy, and accumulated pet hair. A dead bird or rodent in a wall void or attic is a common source people never think to look for.

Carpet Beetle Treatment — straight answers
What are they actually eating?
The larvae feed on keratin — wool, silk, fur, feathers, leather, hair — and they will also work through dried pet food, birdseed and the lint that collects in vents and under baseboards. Purely synthetic carpet is not usually the target, though blended fibres and anything soiled with sweat or food will be. That is why the damage so often shows up on a good wool rug rather than the broadloom next to it.
Does this mean my house is dirty?
No. The adults feed on pollen outdoors and fly in through open windows and doors, so a house with a garden and no screens gets them as readily as anywhere else. They also arrive inside second-hand rugs, furniture and clothing. What they need to become a problem is somewhere undisturbed to feed, not a mess.
How do I know it is beetles and not moths?
Look for what has been left behind. Carpet beetle larvae shed bristly, hollow tan skins as they grow, and the damage is a grazed, thinned patch rather than a clean hole. Clothes moths leave silk — fine webbing, tubes or cases attached to the fabric. If you find both, we treat for both, because it happens.
Do I have to throw out the rug or the coat?
Usually not. Most affected items can be saved with proper cleaning, and we will tell you which ones are worth treating and which are past it. What we will insist on is not putting an infested item back into storage untreated, because that is how the same problem restarts eighteen months later in a different closet.
