Skunk Control
Striped skunks den under decks, sheds, steps and hot tub platforms — anywhere there is a dry cavity with a way in at ground level. There is nothing to spray for a skunk: the job is getting the animal out and then closing the space so nothing else moves in behind it. Done calmly and in the right order, most of these jobs finish without any spraying at all.

How we handle it
- 01
Assessment
We confirm it is a skunk and not something else using the same cavity, find every opening rather than the obvious one, and establish whether young are likely to be present. Season is the first thing we check, because it decides what can be done and when.
- 02
Humane removal
Animals are handled humanely and within Alberta’s wildlife regulations. The method is matched to the situation and the timing is planned so the whole family group is out before anything gets closed — quiet, unhurried work, which is also what keeps the spray risk low.
- 03
Exclusion
Once the space is empty the perimeter of the deck, shed or step gets closed properly — screening carried down and turned out at the base so it cannot simply be dug under. This is the part that decides whether you have this conversation again next spring.
- 04
Clean-up and prevention
Soiled material and residual odour are dealt with where required, and we go through what made the yard appealing in the first place: accessible bins, pet food left out, open compost, an insect-rich lawn.

Common questions
Skunk Control — straight answers
Will it spray while you are working?
Usually not. Spraying is a last resort for a skunk and it gives clear warning first — stamping its front feet, turning, raising the tail. Slow, quiet work and not cornering the animal keeps that risk low, and the removal methods we use are chosen partly for that reason.
There is a skunk under my deck in May. Can you just seal it up?
No, and it is worth understanding why. Late spring and early summer usually means kits in the den. Sealing the adult out leaves the young inside, which turns a wildlife job into a dead-animal and odour job in a space you cannot easily reach. We confirm what is under there first and time the work so everything is out before anything is closed.
What is digging the little cone-shaped holes in my lawn?
Very often a skunk working the turf for grubs and insects overnight. That matters because the lawn itself is the attractant — if the digging is heavy, the underlying insect problem is worth addressing alongside the exclusion work, otherwise the yard stays worth visiting.
Do you poison skunks?
No. It is not the right tool for wildlife, and practically speaking it would leave you with a carcass in a cavity under your deck and a far worse problem than the one you called about. Skunks are removed humanely and within Alberta’s wildlife regulations, and then the space is closed.
