Solar Panel Protection

Pigeons treat a solar array like free housing: shade, warmth, and shelter from every direction but one. Under the panels they nest, breed, and pack the cavity with droppings that corrode racking, stain the roof and shade the cells. The fix is physical — mesh skirting fitted around the array, the space underneath cleared properly, and nothing left open to move back into.

How we handle it

  1. 01

    Array assessment

We look at the array layout, the roof type, the clearance under the panels and how heavy the pressure is. A two-panel install over a bungalow and a full-roof array on a two-storey are different jobs, and the mesh gets specified accordingly.

  2. 02

    Clearing & cleanup

Nests, debris and accumulated droppings come out from under the panels, and the area is cleaned and disinfected. Where active nests are involved, the work is timed and handled lawfully — most species are protected while nesting.

  3. 03

    Mesh skirting installation

UV-stable galvanized mesh is fitted around the full perimeter of the array using panel-safe clips — nothing is screwed or drilled into the panels, the racking or the roof. Fitted right, it disappears into the shadow line of the array.

  4. 04

    Verification & proofing

We check the perimeter for gaps, confirm the birds have not simply shifted to a vent or ledge nearby, and proof those spots while we are up there. And our results are guaranteed.

Where we work

Solar Panel Protection across Calgary

Rooftop solar has grown fast across Calgary, and the pigeons noticed before most owners did. We install solar panel protection on homes and businesses across the city and take the same work on in Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane, Okotoks and Strathmore — often alongside vent proofing and general bird work on the same visit.

Common questions

Solar Panel Protection — straight answers

Will the mesh damage my panels or void the warranty?

The mesh attaches with clips made for solar racking, not screws — nothing penetrates the panels, the frames or your roof. That is exactly why we use the clip system: drilling anything up there is how warranties get voided, and there is no reason to do it.

Can I just scare the pigeons off instead?

Deterrents move pigeons a few metres and then they come back — the space under an array is too good a home to give up over a plastic owl. Exclusion works because it removes the option entirely. It is a one-time physical fix rather than an ongoing argument with the flock.

Do the droppings actually affect the system?

Droppings on the glass shade the cells they cover, and shaded cells drag down the output of the string they sit on. Under the panels, accumulated droppings are corrosive to racking and wiring over time. We clean the panels and clear the cavity as part of the job, so the system starts clean behind the mesh.

How long does the mesh last?

It is galvanized, UV-stable material rated for exactly this exposure, and a properly clipped perimeter is a multi-year fix rather than a seasonal one. If a section ever takes damage — hail, a falling branch — it can be re-clipped in that spot without redoing the array.
