Bird Removal from Vent — straight answers
Is a nest in the dryer vent actually dangerous?
It deserves to be treated seriously. Dryer ducts carry hot, lint-laden exhaust, and packing that duct with dry nest material both blocks the airflow and puts combustible debris in the path of the heat. We would not tell you a house is about to burn down, but we would tell you not to keep running the dryer until the duct is cleared.
Can I just put mesh over the vent to keep them out?
Not on a dryer vent. Standard screen catches lint, which blocks the duct and creates the same airflow problem from the other direction. Bathroom and attic vents can take mesh or a screened cover, but a dryer needs a proper guard designed to let lint pass while keeping birds out.
How do I know if it is a bird or something else in the wall?
Birds are noisiest at first light and through the day, and the sound is chirping and scrabbling near the vent line. Rodents are heavier and more active at night, and squirrels are loudest at dawn and dusk. If we are not certain from the sound, the exterior inspection settles it — occupied vents look occupied.
What if the bird has died inside the duct?
That happens, usually when a bird gets past the hood and cannot turn around. We remove it, clear the duct, and disinfect — the odour and the fly activity that follow are the reason it needs doing properly rather than waiting it out.
