We look at the depth and spread of the build-up, what is underneath it, and who and what is nearby — air intakes, open windows, walkways, seating. The area is contained and signed off before work starts so the material does not travel while we are clearing it.

Controlled removal
Droppings and nest debris are removed with dust suppression and appropriate protective equipment rather than dry-swept or blasted. Dried material is the part that becomes airborne, so keeping it damp and contained is the whole method.

Can our caretaker just pressure wash it off?
We would not recommend it. A pressure washer atomises dried droppings and spreads the material across the area and into air intakes, which is exactly what you want to avoid. Droppings can harbour organisms that cause respiratory illness, so the removal needs dust suppression, containment and proper protective equipment.
How bad does it need to be before it is worth doing?
If it has crusted and built up depth, or if it is anywhere near an air intake, an entrance, a walkway or a space people work in, it is worth dealing with. A light scatter on an open roof is a different conversation. We will look and tell you honestly which one you have.
Do we have to close the area while you work?
Usually only the immediate zone, and only while we are in it. We contain and sign the work area, schedule around trading and residential hours where we can, and on occupied buildings we stage the job so the disruption stays local. We are fully insured and WCB covered, and our technicians are fall-protection and ladder-safety certified for rooftop and elevated work.
Why do you insist on doing the proofing at the same time?
Because a clean surface with nothing stopping the birds is a clean surface for one season. Doing both together also means the netting or spikes are fixed to sound, clean substrate, which is what makes the anchoring hold. If budget means phasing it, we will tell you which surfaces to proof first.
